Proper Bicycling Posture
Injury or Symptom Possible Causes Suggested Adjustments
Low-Back Pain Incorrect reach, Incorrect saddle position, reduced low-back flexibility Check upper-body position, reassess seat position, “roll from hips”, raise bars
Neck Pain Excessive neck extension, incorrect riding position Raise handlebars, consider upright handlebars, unlock elbows; change hand, head, and neck positions frequently
Knee Pain Saddle too low and/or too far forward Raise saddle and/or move saddle back
Hand Numbness/Tingling Incorrect frame size, too much weight on hands, reach is too long Ensure correct frame size, decrease reach/drop, padded gloves
Saddle Pain (Front & Center) Bars too low and/or incorrect saddle fit Raise bars and/or tip saddle down, ensure correct saddle fit
