Health Benefits of Golf

June 27, 2018

Interview with Paul Tryninewski, PT

For our next blog in the Outdoor Series for Men’s Health Month, we will get to know Paul, a PT in our Altoona office, through his reasons for enjoying Golf.

Fresh Air

"I like the fresh air..." Being outdoors, breathing in the fresh air is very relaxing. It reduces stress and relieves anxiety. This helps you let go of the day by focusing on what’s in front of you- fun with your friends and/or time to yourself on the golf course. Playing golf is beneficial, no matter your age or physical ability. You can walk the entire course or you can use a golf cart if you are unable to walk long distances. Golf truly is a sport for everyone.

Physical Health

“I like the… difficulties and rewards of playing golf. The reason I like sports is...for the health reasons.” The physical health benefits of exercise include improved cardiovascular health and cancer prevention, but there are many other benefits too. Golf helps to improve memory and problem solving skills. How does golf do this? Think of each hole as a new puzzle. You have to figure out the best way to hit the ball (what direction, what club to use, etc) toward the hole in the least amount of swings possible. Each day, golfing can be different because of things such as wind speed and wind direction complicating your approach. Golf helps to keep the brain sharp with mental exercise, and figuring out each hole is a great accomplishment and reward.

Mental Health

Golf is also great for your mental well-being. It relieves stress and provides mental and emotional balance. Golf helps to better your quality of life by improving mood, quality of sleep, reaction to stress, and self-esteem. In fact, physical activity is used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for depression and anxiety.

Rules Make It The Same For All Participants

“I like sports… because rules are established, time-tested, and the same for all participants.” No matter your age or ability, golf is a great sport for you. From school aged children to retired adults, everyone benefits from the improvement of social skills, self-esteem, and problem solving. Everyone has the same rules to follow, and everyone has the same benefits of sport.

Sports as a Safe Haven

“That (for the reasons written above) is what makes sport so appealing compared to the business world and other human interaction where people try to take advantage, manipulate, and cheat each other...I find sports a safe haven, both for physical and mental health.”
