Tips To Get You Breathing

April 08, 2020

First and foremost, RELAX.

Try turning off the electronics and turn on some light, quiet, music. Open a window and listen to nature if appropriate. There is often the urge to panic if the lungs are full of fluid and you are having difficulty breathing. This is a natural response, but the best thing to do is try to relax.

Find a comfortable POSITION.

Check out our video post on positioning. In short when there is illness in your lungs they fill with fluid, just like when your joints are injured and they swell up. The best thing you can do is position yourself with your head down rotated to either the right or left sides. This allows for the fluid to drain from your lungs helping to clear them so you can breathe easier. Use pillows, blankets, pads, cushions, or an upside down chair (as shown in the post). Make sure that you are comfortable so you can relax. Expect that there will be coughing and some fluid to come up.

Take SLOW, DEEP, BREATHS.

This helps to allow the natural air pressure in your lungs to push the fluid out of the way and get oxygen deep into your lower lungs. See our post for instructions on “diaphragmatic” breathing.

So remember whether you are trying to stay healthy battling COVID-19 or any other ailment. Following these tips will help you to stay healthy and let your lungs function better to fight off the infection and breathe easier!
