The average initial evaluation appointment is up to one hour.
The state of Pennsylvania requires physical therapy patients to be followed by a medical provider (i.e., a primary physician, specialist, dentist, nurse practitioner, physician assistant) during their therapy treatment. Consequently, a referral or script is requested by the PT clinic when a patient contacts for an appointment. A referral can be brought by the patient at the evaluation appointment or faxed to the clinic directly from the medical provider’s office. If a patient does not have a referral, he can be seen as Direct Access (allowable by state law one time per calendar year for most insurances; Medicare is excluded).
Patient reports are sent to the referring medical provider following the initial evaluation and every 30 days. These reports are to be reviewed, commented upon as necessary and returned, signed, to the PT clinic. If a patient starts as a Direct Access, the patient must either acquire a referral within 30 days or sign a consent form for the release of his report.
